Donna Verdell is the composing alter ego of Dutch pianist, piano teacher and composer Josje Goudswaard. Josje started playing the piano as soon as she was able to climb onto the piano stool. When she was 5 years old, she was allowed to take piano lessons and at age 17 she was accepted to study at the Conservatoire in Rotterdam. She has composed music for popbands, Close Harmony choir and wrote various pieces of chamber music (clarinet, harp, violin and piano quintet). Josje is pianist and arranger of the Tuschinski Trio (www.tuschinskitrio.nl) and she has a beautiful concert programme with violinist Camilla van der Kooij (viool-pianoduo).
While teaching piano Josje found that her students enjoyed playing new material like the music of Einaudi, Tiersen and Satie. So in 2013 she started composing new piano music for her students under the pseudonym Donna Verdell, to give them the opportunity to give an honest opinion about whether or not they liked the music. To Donna’s delight they all where very enthusiastic and so was Dutch publisher Broekmans & van Poppel; The first pieces, “Songs of Seasons” , written for students of late elementary to early intermediate level, were published in September 2014 in The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain and Australia.
Since the name Donna Verdell suited the music perfectly, they decided to stick to this name. In the years following, the piano books “Songs of Summer“ written for early intermediate to intermediate pianists, “Lyric Songs for Every Day” 8 joyful and playable music pieces for students of late elementary to early intermediate level and up and a book especially for harp players “Songs of Four Seasons for Harp” were published.
Donna was asked to write new music for several events of chamber music, she wrote music for violin and piano, clarinet and harp, viola and harp, reed quintet and piano quintet, a suite for advanced piano solo “The Journey“ and a little piece for piano 8 hands “Let’s go for a Walk”. Her first piano solo CD “Donna Verdell Collected Pianoworks 2014-2019” appeared in autumn 2019 and in autumn 2020 a new piece for harp ensemble "Bittersweet" was published.
During the Dutch lockdown at the end of 2020 Donna worked on a great project with City Poet Lisa Veldkamp in which they released a poem with new music every week:"Music meets Poetry". The music of the four most appealing piano solo pieces appeared in Fall 2021 in a new piano book "Songs from a Distance"

Donna Verdell is het compositie alter ego van de Nederlandse pianiste, componiste, en pianodocente Josje Goudswaard. Josje begon met pianospelen zodra ze op de pianokruk kon klimmen. Toen ze vijf jaar oud was, mocht ze op pianoles; op 17 jarige leeftijd werd zij toegelaten tot het Rotterdams Conservatorium en inmiddels is zij al vele jaren werkzaam als pianiste, componiste en pianodocente. Omdat Josje’s studenten graag nieuwe pianomuziek speelden in de stijl van Einaudi, Tiersen en Satie, maar er niet zo veel bestond wat goed speelbaar was, begon Josje in 2013 zelf pianomuziek te schrijven voor haar leerlingen. Zij deed dit onder het pseudoniem Donna Verdell, om hen de gelegenheid te geven om onbevooroordeeld te vertellen wat ze van de muziek vonden. Tot haar vreugde waren haar leerlingen erg enthousiast over de stukken, en zo ook muziekuitgeverij Broekmans & van Poppel; de eerste werken, voor late beginners tot beginnend gevorderde pianisten werden, gebundeld in het pianoboek “Songs of Seasons“, in september 2014 uitgegeven in Nederland, Duitsland, Zwitserland, Engeland en Australië.
Besloten werd om haar alter ego Donna Verdell aan te houden, want die paste eigenlijk heel mooi bij de muziek. In de jaren erna verschenen de bundels “Songs of Summer“ voor wat meer gevorderde pianisten, “Lyric Songs for Every Day“ geschikt voor laat beginners tot beginnend gevorderde pianisten en een eerste boek speciaal voor harpspelers “Songs of Four Seasons for Harp“.
Sinds Donna werd gevraagd om muziek voor anderen te schrijven heeft ze inmiddels werken voor viool en piano, muziek voor altviool/ clarinet en harp en viool en harp, riet kwintet en piano kwintet, een suite voor piano solo, "The Journey" en een stuk voor 8 handig piano “Let’s Go For a Walk” gecomponeerd. In het najaar 2019 kwam haar eerste piano solo CD uit “Donna Verdell collected pianoworks 2014-2019”. In de herfst 2020 verscheen haar nieuwste werk voor harp ensemble "Bittersweet".
Tijdens de lockdown eind 2020 werkte Donna samen met de Alphense schrijfster en Stadsdichter Lisa Veldkamp aan een superleuk project waarin zij elke week een video met nieuwe muziek en een gedicht op social media lanceerden: "Music meets Poetry" Muziek van de vier mooiste piano solo stukken uit dit project verscheen in de herfst van 2021 "Songs from a Distance".
Op dit moment is Donna bezig met nieuwe muziek voor 4 handig piano en schrijft zij de arrangementen voor de muziekbus waarmee zij samen met violiste Camilla van der Kooij al meer dan 130 Voordeurconcerten gaf, en voor het Tuschinski Trio.
